Carthage College invites applications for a tenure-track position as Director of Orchestral Activities and Conductor of the Carthage Orchestra.
The ideal candidate will have experience building and conducting orchestras at the collegiate level. The Music Department currently has a chamber orchestra and seeks to expand the program to offer both chamber and symphony orchestra ensembles. Applicants should be open to collaborations with directors of choral music, jazz, opera, music theatre, and wind ensembles. In addition to conducting the chamber orchestra, the candidate will teach studio lessons on a stringed instrument (violin, viola, or cello), recruit, and teach other courses based on needs of the department and candidates area(s) of expertise (e.g., conducting, music theory, or music education courses).
A DMA is preferred, MM required for consideration. Experience as a secondary school orchestra teacher is highly desirable. Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with education and experience. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate or Assistant Professor.

Teaching Fellows at Carthage serve as members of the Western Heritage teaching faculty for three years. Successful candidates will have by the time of the appointment attained the terminal degree in their field and have developed a clear research agenda. Specific expertise may be in any academic discipline, provided candidates demonstrate potential for excellence in analyzing primary texts consonant with standard works studied in the Western Heritage curriculum. A faculty committee for the Western Heritage Program determines the texts to be studied; currently, 15 to 20 texts are taught over two terms in chronological order, from Homer's Odyssey to DuBois's Souls of Black Folk. Potential for effective teaching of such texts to first-year Carthage students is a key selection criterion for the position.
Fellows will fulfill teaching, course development, course management, and other responsibilities associated with Western Heritage courses as scheduled and assigned by the Director of Western Heritage under the supervision of the Chair of the Interdisciplinary Studies Division and the Provost of the College. Fellows will also make clear progress during their appointment toward achieving their own goals for scholarly achievement.
Specific responsibilities include
- Instruction of two sections of Western Heritage per term.
- Presentations at and participation in faculty development activities (faculty seminars on course texts, pre-term workshops on course preparation, and weekly meetings on continued course preparation) as determined by the Director of Western Heritage.
- Full participation in new faculty orientation activities the first year, including Carthage workshops necessary to become Writing-Intensive certified, as well as program and faculty meetings.
- Delivery of one public lecture per year.
Fellows are expected to support the curricular goals and the mission of the College. Collegial interaction with faculty from across the divisions of the College is encouraged. Since Western Heritage courses constitute an essential part of the core of the general education curriculum, the opportunity to engage faculty across the curriculum is significant.

Carthage College seeks an experienced and accomplished candidate to become the next Donald D. Hedberg Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies in the Natural Sciences and to lead the Entrepreneurship in the Natural Sciences Program (ScienceWorks). Founded in 1994, the ScienceWorks program has propelled hundreds of Carthage undergraduates beyond traditional post-graduate options and into areas that are entrepreneurial or innovative in nature.
The Hedberg Chair oversees the ScienceWorks Program, which includes the minor in Entrepreneurial Studies in the Natural Sciences. The successful candidate will engage in teaching and mentoring of undergraduate students in research and the development of technical business plans. The Hedberg Chair is expected to strengthen the program by seeking extramural funding and partnerships across the Milwaukee-Chicago corridor. The Chair will work collaboratively with departments throughout the College to expand entrepreneurship opportunities for Carthage students.
The Chair is housed in the Natural Science Division of the College and works with a faculty that has a long history of collaboration and interdisciplinary work.

Carthage College invites applications for a tenure-track/tenured faculty position, starting August 2012, in the Department of Physics and Astronomy within the Division of Natural Sciences. The ideal candidate will be an experimental or applied physicist who will engage students in an active, long-term program of applied physics research, in areas with significant future impact. The ability to conduct research both on- and off- campus, and develop institutional links with research consortia or national and industrial laboratories, will be especially sought for, along with evidence of solid teaching. The new faculty member will teach introductory and advanced courses in physics, mentor students in undergraduate research, and enhance departmental programs in applied and experimental physics.
