Adolescent Portable Therapy (APT) is an innovative substance abuse and mental health treatment program for juvenile justice and child welfare involved adolescents and their families that was created by Vera and is now in its 9th year of operation. The program addresses substance abuse and mental health problems using a family-centered, strengths-based approach to treatment, combining elements of cognitive-behavioral and family therapy. APT works closely with the multiple government systems involved with adolescents in order to ensure continuity of care. The goal is to empower families in making transitions across levels of service, or away from systemic intervention altogether. APT currently seeks Therapists to conduct home-based sessions with families of youth involved with the juvenile justice and child welfare systems, who are identified as needing drug and mental health treatment.
Responsibilities
Therapists conduct intensive family and individual therapy sessions, focused on substance use and family functioning. In some cases sessions will be conducted in Spanish, as per the family’s needs. These sessions take place in detention and in the community, not in the APT office. Therapists employ a treatment model developed at APT based on research and best practices. This model emphasizes the family and youth's active role in treatment, building on their abilities and goals, in order to keep youth in the community, in school, and free from drug dependence. They also provide crisis intervention and intensive case management, including formulating treatment plans and routinely maintaining and entering detailed case notes into a database for case management and research purposes. Therapists also collaborate with various agencies regarding service delivery to individual participants and advocate for families facing service delivery problems with schools, foster care and the courts. Therapists receive close supervision and training in family work. Therapists must be flexible and resourceful.
Qualifications
- Masters in social work, counseling, psychology, or related field.
- An interest in, and commitment to, family therapy is necessary.
- Experience working in an urban setting providing substance abuse, health, mental health or counseling services to families and adolescents preferred.
- Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred, as is the ability to work with a culturally diverse population.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Frequent travel in and around the greater New York City area required.
- Position contingent upon clearance by the NY Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment and criminal history background checks.

Adolescent Portable Therapy Program (APT) is a Vera Demonstration project that provides substance use and mental health treatment for adolescents involved with the New York City juvenile and child welfare systems. APT works with youths and families as a way of preventing institutional placement, to help kids succeed on probation and as they return home from incarceration. By providing family-oriented services that travel with the youth across government agencies (portability), the project aims to reduce substance abuse and recidivism among its participants.
Responsibilities: The APT summer intern will conduct intake assessments with prospective APT youth. Interns will work as part of the APT team, interviewing young people to confirm their eligibility for the program, and obtaining the necessary documents for enrollment. Additional projects and responsibilities may be assigned as appropriate.
Qualifications: Students of all levels are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to candidates with course work in psychology or youth development field, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work as a team member. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential. Cross-cultural experience and Spanish-speaking skills are desirable. Center on Immigration and Justice Law and Graduate Student Summer Interns (3)
Vera’s Center on Immigration and Justice collaborates with government, nonprofits, and communities to develop evidence-based justice solutions for systems affecting immigrants and their families. The Center also addresses the challenges presented by the increasing convergence of the criminal justice and immigration systems. The Center on Immigration and Justice seeks law students to work as interns on a variety of policy-related and legal projects.
The interns will work closely with a small team of Vera program staff on projects that aim to improve immigrants’ access to justice. Current programs include a legal orientation program to provide detained individuals in removal proceedings with legal information, pro se assistance and access to pro bono legal services; a program to provide unaccompanied children in the United States with legal information and access to pro bono legal counsel; a program that trains law enforcement on the use of the U-visa; a program that is assessing promising police-immigrant relations practices; and technical assistance/consulting activities to assist police departments and other government agencies in overcoming language barriers and serving immigrant communities.
Responsibilities: The intern duties may include: conducting background legal and/or policy research; interviewing experts and others; drafting best practice memos and short reports; assisting in developing trainings and presentations; analyzing data collected to inform programs and help develop program plans; and researching potential funders and writing grant proposals. Students interested in the internship should note that while all of the work will be law-related, much of it will be supporting policy and technical assistance. Vera does not provide direct legal services to immigrants
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be have strong communication skills, excellent initiative, genuine flexibility, a demonstrated interest in immigration, law/public policy, and/or criminal justice, and a sense of humor. Fluency in a second language is a plus.

Vera’s Center on Immigration and Justice seeks a Research Associate to work primarily on a human trafficking project funded by the National Institute of Justice to validate and disseminate a screening tool with the potential to improve victim identification, victim services, and law enforcement on a nationwide scale. The Research Associate will also work on other CIJ projects that provide legal information and services to detained adults and children in removal proceedings in partnership with government and a nationwide network of legal services subcontractors. The Research Associate will have a key role in our currently funded projects, as well as in identifying gaps to be covered in future projects.

The Research Associate will work closely with other research and program staff in carrying out various research duties including but not limited to:
- Coordinate research activities with government and community partners and consultants, plan and participate in community researcher training, site visits and focus group meetings

- Conduct background and literature research and distill key findings into memos and other internal communications

Qualifications

Center on Sentencing and Corrections (2)
Vera’s Center on Sentencing and Corrections (CSC) provides technical assistance and research support to state and local government officials to help them develop cost-effective strategies for protecting public safety. Current projects include:
• Los Angeles County Jail Overcrowding Project: CSC provided comprehensive data analysis and drafted policy recommendations to a countywide working group tasked with studying the overcrowding of the Los Angeles County jails. As a result, Los Angeles County is pursuing a new pretrial services program.
• Justice Reinvestment Initiative: CSC works with states and counties on the development and implementation of justice reinvestment strategies, which is intended to manage criminal justice populations more cost-effectively and generate savings that can be reinvested in evidence-based strategies that increase public safety. States and localities collect and analyze data on drivers of criminal justice populations and costs, identify and implement changes to increase efficiencies, and measure both the fiscal and public safety impacts of those changes.
• Reports and Conferences: Each year, CSC drafts a number of policy briefs and reports on nationwide sentencing and fiscal trends. CSC also convenes – through conferences and webinars – criminal justice professionals to discuss successful corrections and supervision programs.
Responsibilities: The intern will work closely with CSC staff to identify and research key issues in sentencing and corrections policy and practice. The intern may: prepare written memoranda to be used in engagements with government clients, prepare presentations that will be made to senior policymakers, perform administrative tasks, and develop surveys to collect data on criminal justice trends and practices. There may be opportunities to attend client meetings, observe staff as they work with clients in various capacities, and participate in strategy meetings.

The Senior Program Associate will report directly to the Center’s Director and Associate Director, and s/he will manage and mentor a team of program associates and researchers. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and policy experience in the criminal justice field. S/he will also have at least seven years of work experience, including some management experience, in order to effectively manage a team of young professionals.
The Senior Program Associate will be given the following primary responsibilities:
- Devise and manage technical assistance to government partners, including intensive on-site assistance in the field;

Common Justice (1)
Common Justice, a demonstration project of the Vera Institute of Justice, is an alternative to incarceration/restorative justice demonstration project that introduces an innovative new approach to violent crime that meets the needs of victims, reduces recidivism, improves satisfaction with the justice system, and has been proven to work elsewhere in the United States and other parts of the world. Common Justice, which is the first project of its kind in the country, provides an alternative to incarceration to defendants facing prison sentences and important opportunity for healing to those harmed by a range of crimes, including assault, burglary, and robbery. The project involves younger adults (ages 16 to 24) facing charges and prison sentences of at least one year in Supreme Court in Brooklyn and those they harm. If the victims welcome the opportunity, these cases are diverted into a conferencing process designed to recognize the harm done, identify the needs and interests of the victim(s), and agree to appropriate actions to hold the responsible party accountable. Staff closely monitors defendants’ compliance with the resultant agreements—which may include extensive community service, rehabilitative and educational programming, violence intervention classes, and restitution, among other sanctions—and connects victims of crime with appropriate services. The project serves as an alternative to incarceration for suitable cases, and stands to save the public substantial sums of money while improving public safety and enhancing the well-being of victims. Common Justice is seeking an intern whose primary responsibility would be to identify suitable cases in Supreme Court and initiate the project’s advocacy to have those cases diverted to the program. The intern would also contribute to other work for the project.
Responsibilities: Help identify suitable Supreme Court cases for the project; screen cases according to program admission criteria; help identify appropriate service referrals for victims and defendants; conduct research as necessary; work on other projects as assigned.
Qualifications: Experience in the criminal justice field; strong interest in social justice for the underserved; strong interest in criminal defense issues; ability to work with diverse populations, strong written and oral communication skills; creativity flexibility, patience, follow-through, excellent organizational skills, team player, bilingual Spanish/English desirable.

The Vera Institute of Justice seeks an experienced editor to join its six-person Communications Department. Vera’s Communications Department is charged with ensuring that the Institute’s work product is accessible and meaningful to our core audiences: government officials, practitioners, the media, foundations, and the public. The position does not require prior experience in Vera’s areas of concentration. However, the successful candidate will be curious about the range of Vera’s activities and have a demonstrated commitment to social justice The successful candidate will be, foremost, a skilled editor. He or she will have meaningful experience working with complex texts and be able to deftly translate social science and government jargon into clear, accurate prose. Twin capacities to analyze and distill a focused message from multiple materials and perspectives and to successfully juggle several deadlines at once are also essential. Candidates should also have some experience and interest in managing media relations.

CBAU performs cost-benefit analyses and other cost-related studies, provides assistance to jurisdictions conducting their own studies, and carries out research to advance the knowledge and application of cost-benefit analysis in the justice system.
Responsibilities: Interns will work predominately on materials for the Cost-Benefit Knowledge Bank for Criminal Justice (CBKB), a project funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance and staffed by CBAU. CBKB aims to broaden and deepen the understanding and use of cost-benefit analysis in criminal justice. CBKB helps practitioners and jurisdictions build their capacity to use cost-benefit analysis through presentations, how-to guides, and literature reviews, most of which will be available online at www.cbkb.org.

Vera’s Legal Department provides comprehensive legal advice and assistance to the managers of Vera's administrative and substantive departments.
Responsibilities: The Legal Department is seeking an intellectually agile and hard-working law student with a discerning judgment and strong interest in nonprofit organizations and operations. An interest in the substantive areas in which Vera works (including criminal justice, juvenile justice and immigration), and in employment law and policy, is a plus. The intern, who will work during the Summer of 2012, will work with the General Counsel and Assistant General Counsel. Tasks may include legal research and writing, policy review and assistance with human resources and other policy creation, and helping to provide strategic advice and counsel to all facets of the organization. The intern will participate in Legal Department and Institute-wide meetings, as well as meetings about many Vera projects, such that all interns will have been exposed to many different aspects of Vera's work.

The focus of the collection is on the social sciences, with social services, criminal justice, research methodology, urban affairs and public welfare as its greatest strengths.
Responsibilities:
The intern’s main responsibility will focus on:
• Assisting the librarian with the institutional repository in respect to uploading new documents/records, organizing the collections, and assigning subject keywords
• Cataloging and updating MARC records for the 2,000+ books and periodical collection using an open source cataloging software

The intern also will be involved in all aspects of the library which may include:

Vera’s New Orleans office is seeking a second Pretrial Specialist for New Orleans Pretrial Services, which the office administers. New Orleans Pretrial Services will soon commence formal operations, serving the Criminal District Court. Using objective criteria, the program will provide assessment of defendants in the criminal justice system to aid the court in making appropriate pretrial release and detention decisions, and will provide supervision services that support the release of additional persons and reduce the risk of failure to appear or re-arrest. The two Pretrial Specialists will assess defendants before their first appearances by conducting interviews and verifying the information provided by defendants, and will provide supervision of released defendants.
Responsibilities
The Pretrial Specialist’s duties include the following:
- Interview defendants before first appearance to gather information on community ties, such as residence and employment;
- Telephone defendants’ families, friends, and employers to verify residence and employment information provided during interviews;
- Prepare, review, and summarize defendants’ criminal history records;
- Prepare report to the court with risk assessment and respond to inquiries from the court;
- Maintain contact with released defendants to remind of court appearances;
- Facilitate return to court for defendants missing court appearances;
- Provide additional supervision services as resources permit;
- Provide assistance to defendants as resources permit; and
- Participate in the development of the Pretrial Services Program.
Qualifications

Prosecution and Racial Justice Intern (1)
The Prosecution and Racial Justice Project (PRJ) at the Vera Institute of Justice, has partnered with a select group of nationally respected prosecutors to help them effectively monitor and manage the use of discretion in their offices. The project will support their efforts to ensure racial fairness in the prosecutorial process by identifying areas that suggest a disparate racial impact, enabling them to work with their deputies and assistant prosecutors to take corrective action where needed.
Responsibilities: The intern will work closely with the PRJ Director and staff to: 1) identify and research key issues related to race, prosecution, and discretion; 2) prepare briefing memoranda for PRJ staff, 3) assist in organizing and preparing for advisory board and other meetings; and 4) perform some administrative tasks.

The Prosecution and Racial Justice Project (P&RJ) at the Vera Institute of Justice seeks a Senior Program Associate to assume a mid-level role in its management. P&RJ has partnered with a select group of nationally respected chief prosecutors to create internal systems that will enable them to effectively monitor and manage the use of discretion in their offices. The project will support the prosecutors’ efforts to ensure racial fairness in the prosecutorial process by identifying areas of broad discretion and enabling them to work with their deputies and assistant prosecutors to take corrective action if and where patterns of bias emerge. P&RJ is in year one of a three-year work plan which will also provide technical assistance to other chief prosecutors who are interested in ensuring racial fairness in the exercise of prosecutorial discretion.
Responsibilities
The Senior Program Associate will report directly to the project’s director. His or her main responsibilities will be:
- Managing the development and implementation of internal management systems in one or more of the project sites. This includes helping the director coordinate the deployment of project staff, assessing and observing case processing practices, coaching prosecution staff in the use of the new systems, working with community steering committees at the site, and managing – with the chief prosecutors – local communications efforts;

As delegated by the director, this effort will include developing a multi-year plan that includes media, briefing and writing elements. The Senior Program Associate will be required to draft program publications, op-editorials and talking points for the chief prosecutors, director and advisory board members. S/he will also be expected to present on the project in multiple public speaking engagements;
- Working with the director to manage and design multi-jurisdictional technical assistance meetings and advisory board meetings;
- Assisting in the general development of Vera’s work on prosecution. This may include grant writing, production of briefing and research memoranda and other projects, as assigned.
Qualifications
- The ideal candidate will be an attorney with at least five years of experience as a prosecutor (preferably with supervisory experience) who possesses a demonstrated interest in criminal justice, and matters relating to racial justice.
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills and public speaking ability is required, as are excellent writing abilities.
- S/he must be skilled at facilitating meetings of senior professionals and able to work effectively with a broad range of people, from prosecutors, community leaders to social scientists.
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience working with policy and curriculum development.
- A successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, work collegially and be willing to travel outside of New York City up to 2-3 times a month.

Substance Use and Mental Health (SUMH) Research Interns (1)
Vera’s Substance Use and Mental Health Program (SUMH) conducts applied research to help public officials and community organizations develop empirically driven responses to the substance use and mental health needs of people involved in justice systems. SUMH staff collects and analyzes quantitative and qualitative data and evaluates existing programs to understand the experiences of those affected by psychiatric disorders or substance use and policies that prolong their involvement in the justice system.
Responsibilities: The interns will have the opportunity to work on a range of tasks, including data collection, data entry and management, data analysis, literature reviews, and helping to prepare briefing memos and presentations.
Qualifications: Undergraduate and graduate students majoring in the social sciences, clinical disciplines, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Guardianship Legal Intern (1)
The Guardianship Project is one of Vera’s innovative demonstration projects. It was established to provide model guardianship services to people adjudicated by the courts as incapacitated. The agency serves a culturally diverse population in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The Project employs a range of professionals including social workers, lawyers, property managers, and financial managers who work as a team to provide efficient and effective service and advocacy for our elderly and disabled clients. Guardianship practice covers a wide range of issues, including foreclosures, public benefits, social security, landlord/tenant law, real estate management and transactions, medical decision-making, and elder abuse.
Responsibilities:
• Researching, drafting, and preparing motions and other court papers
• Providing support to all members of the Legal Department
• Maintaining court docket
• Serving and filing legal papers
• Preparing affirmations detailing services provided to clients
• Appearing in court for hearings and other proceedings
• Consulting with case managers and other staff when necessary
• Conducting legal research
• Identifying clients’ legal issues as they arise, and addressing them accordingly with supervisors
• Travel to clients’ homes and residential facilities may be required
